Florida: The Top Choice for Americans to Live

When it comes to finding the perfect place to live, Americans are drawn to sunshine, safety, and affordability, according to a recent Clever Real Estate study. It’s no surprise, then, that Florida tops the list of the most desirable states.

Americans’ mixed feelings about living

Despite 73% of Americans expressing satisfaction with their current location, 59% still feel frustrated with their city or state, and 43% admit they are embarrassed by where they live. The study surveyed 1,000 Americans about their living preferences and found that, while nearly 60% stay in their hometowns, 84% are open to relocating if the right opportunity arises.

The main barrier for many is financial. About 50% of respondents feel they can’t afford to move
to a more desirable place.

What makes a place desirable?

So, what makes a location appealing? Americans prioritize safety, affordability, and pleasant weather. Here’s what they value most:
Conversely, the top deal-breakers are:

Tampa is the most desired city

Given Americans’ preference for affordable, sunny, and safe locations, it’s no wonder Tampa, Florida, emerged as the most desirable city. Tampa boasts year-round warm weather, no state taxes, a low crime rate, and a more affordable cost of living compared to other Florida cities. With a median home value of $361,177, it’s cheaper than Orlando and Miami, where median home prices are $379,039 and $441,339, respectively.

Kirstin Albert from the Tampa Convention Center highlights the city’s appeal: “From the rich diversity and incredible restaurants to our beautiful waterfront with boating attractions just steps outside our door, there’s something for everyone. Plus, our friendly community and year-round summer weather make it a great place to live.”

Following Tampa, other top cities include Charlotte (North Carolina), Virginia Beach (Virginia), Nashville (TN), and Orlando (Florida). Honolulu is named the top midsize city, although its high cost of living—a median home value of $794,000—might surprise some. Other notable midsize cities are Colorado Springs (Colorado), Charleston (South Carolina), Cape Coral (Florida), and Palm Bay (Florida).

Florida: The Most Desirable State to Live

Florida stands out as the most desirable state, home to a quarter of the top large and midsize metros. Over one-third of respondents ranked Florida among their top five states, placing it ahead of California, which ranks second. Florida’s lower tax burden and cost of living give it an edge over California, which also has some of the least desirable cities.

Texas, Hawaii, and New York complete the top five states. Despite their desirability, no cities in California, Texas, or New York topped the list. In fact, some of New York and California’s largest cities are seen as among the least desirable places to live.

Least Desired Places to Live

The study also uncovered the least desirable places to live. One-third of respondents rated Washington, D.C., as one of the worst cities, followed by New York City, San Francisco, Chicago, and Detroit. Los Angeles also made the list of the six least desirable cities.

The high crime rates and exorbitant living costs in these cities contribute to their low rankings. Similarly, California, known for its high costs, ranked as the least desirable state, followed by New York, Alaska, Alabama, and Texas.

Despite this, Southern states are noted for their friendliness. Hawaii tops the list for kindness, followed by Tennessee, Texas, South Carolina, and Florida. Southern cities like Nashville, Charlotte, Virginia Beach, Atlanta, and Austin are also recognized for their hospitality.

On the flip side, New York is often criticized for being rude and pretentious. However, it does stand out for having some of the best food in the country.

Overall, Florida’s combination of affordable living, safety, and sunny weather makes it a top choice for Americans seeking a new place to call home.
